About Us

The Birdlife Indonesia Association, or Burung Indonesia, is an Indonesian legal organization which was founded on 15^th July 2002 in the purpose of conserving Indonesian wild birds and their habitats. Burung Indonesia is the only BirdLife International Partner in Indonesia, and is part of the BirdLife International Global Partnership which includes 123 organizations worldwide.

In the first five years, the implementations of Burung Indonesia’s conservation action were carried out in Sumba, Flores, Tanimbar, Halmahera, and Sangihe-Talaud. One of the important notes during this period was the establishment of Hutan Harapan, an innovative program following the publication of a breakthrough regulation by the Government of Indonesia: ecosystem restoration in production forests. Hutan Harapan was aimed to save Sumatra’s remaining lowland forests.

In the next period, Burung Indonesia expanded its conservation actions to new areas including Gorontalo. The Wallacea Partnership Program was initiated. In collaboration with 102 Civil Society Organizations in Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara and Maluku Islands, the program has succeeded in expanding the geographical scope of Burung Indonesia’s conservation actions, not limited to terrestrial ecosystems but also to include coastal, marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Towards the second decade from its establishment, Burung Indonesia began to build conservation entrepreneurship aimed at contributing to economic development in locations critical to biodiversity and sustaining the organization’s long-term funding. The Java Program was initiated by conservation activities on songbird species and its habitats in western part of Java Island. Identification of Important Areas for Birds and Biodiversity in Papua has also started. The era of Membership Program began in this period, which is on 15^th July 2017.

In the early second decade, the conservation actions in the coastal and marine ecosystems have undergone significant development, covering the waters of South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Banggai Islands and Tomini Gulf. In collaboration with local governments and local communities, Burung Indonesia also continues to develop various approaches to sustainable natural resource management in terrestrial ecosystem locations. One important achievement to note is the success of the Mbeliling Landscape Multiventure Cooperative in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, in obtaining a Timber Legality Verification System certificate.

The membership and public-participated events, included the regulars since 2017, are the Asian Waterbird Census, Raptor Migratory Watch, Celebrating Bird Diversity in Indonesia, Nature Trip and Tea Time with Burung Indonesia.

On July 15 2021, the first Member Meeting was held since the start of the membership era. One of the decisions taken at this meeting was the approval of the composition of the Association Management Board led by Nuning S. Barwa and the Association Supervisory Board chaired by DR. R. Boedi Mranata. The Indonesian Bird Association office is currently led by Dian Agista as Executive Director.
